As the curtain goes up on the Met’s 2012-2013 season with director Bartlett Sher’s new production of one of the greatest comic operas, Donizetti’s L’Elisir d’Amore (starring Anna Netrebko and Matthew Polenzani and conducted by Maurizio Benini), we are pleased to present this special NYFF edition of The Met: Live in HD.The performance, transmitted live from the Met stage, will be followed by a live, in-theater discussion with Met Opera General Manager Peter Gelb and Gary Halvorson, Emmy Award-winning director of The Met: Live in HD, who will both come straight from the TV truck!

The first of the “Three Queens“ operas by Donizetti tells of Anne Boleyn's disastrous marriage to Henry VIII. Anna Netrebko plays the doomed queen, Ildar Abdrazakov is her Henry VIII, and Stephen Costello is Lord Percy.

Tenor Javier Camarena and soprano Pretty Yende team up for a feast of bel canto vocal fireworks—including the show-stopping tenor aria “Ah! Mes amis,” with its nine high Cs. Alessandro Corbelli and Maurizio Muraro trade off as the comic Sergeant Sulpice, with mezzo-soprano Stephanie Blythe as the outlandish Marquise of Berkenfield. Enrique Mazzola conducts.

Country bumpkin Nemorino is desperately in love with Adina, but she barely gives him the time of day. She seems to be smitten with the handsome braggart, Captain Belcore. Perhaps Dr. Dulcamara can spare a magic cure to save the day.

A reprise of 2009's production with cast changes, including Natalie Dessay and Joseph Calleja. The famous Mad Scene is orchestrated with a glass harmonica per Donizetti's original score, and not a flute, which is more commonly used today.
